Rigging & Lifting for Workers at Height (Telecoms)

Course aims

The course is designed to provide a practical and theoretical enhancement to the safe slinging and lifting appreciation course and other height safety courses.


 

As a focused complement to HSS working at height training, this course includes an outline of rigging and lifting, as well as guidance on types of equipment that can be utilised.

It also covers details relevant to the equipment standards to ensure compliance under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). The criteria for issue, ID marking, inspection, record keeping, maintenance, storage and withdrawal from service are also explained.

All candidates will be subject to continuous assessment by the instructor and will undergo a final assessment exercise.

Course agenda

In addition to the theory elements of the Safe Slinging & Lifting Appreciation course, the following topics will be emphasised:

 

Practical elements include:

  • Legislation, e.g. LOLER
  • Inspection & Record Keeping
  • Strengths and characteristivs of Equipment
  • Introduction to the Equipment
  • The correct selection of equipment
  • Ropes and knot tying
  • Use and setting up of pulley systems
  • Safe use of wire rope winch and chain block type devices
  • Safe use of capstan type winches
  • Cordon and control of lift area
  • Practical lifting with capstan
  • Practical lifting using pulleys
  • Tag lines and control of loads
  • Landing or positioning equipment safely

Certification

Delegates successfully completing the course will receive a certificate and a photo ID card, valid for three years.

Notes

Safe Slinging & Lifting Appreciation course is a prerequisite for this course.
